Alan Smith, a 1993 Trevecca Hall of Fame inductee, also became a member of the NAIA Hall of Fame in 1995.
Smith, served Trevecca for 35 years before retiring in 2007, began his
tenure in the Trevecca Athletic Department as the head coach of the
first ever Trevecca men's and women's tennis teams in 1972. Smith
coached the men's team until the program was terminated in 1992. Over
his 20 year tennis coaching career at Trevecca, Smith amassed a career
record of 300-129. A seven-time Conference Coach of the Year and
five-time NAIA District 24 Coach of the Year, Smith's services to
Trevecca have been recognized on both a local and national scale. Smith
was Trevecca's athletic director for nine years.

Smith's
tenure as athletics director began in the fall of 1998 when he was
named interim director. He began official status in the summer of 1999.
Trevecca's athletic department has seen enormous growth during his
tenure. Nine years ago the picture was significantly different. During
the 1997-98 season Trevecca's five sports at the time produced only
three measurable awards. The women's basketball team had the
TranSouth's freshman of the year and the newcomer of the year and had a
player named third team All-TranSouth.
Affectionately
known as Smitty or Coach Smith by decades of past Trevecca athletes on
the intramural or intercollegiate teams, Smith will be missed by all
around the campus.
Trevecca
president Dr. Dan Boone began his relationship with Alan Smith during
his days as a student at Trevecca, "I was a sophomore in college when
Alan Smith came to Trevecca. His mark and influence on generations of
students is part of the Trevecca Experience. Alan's devotion to God,
his love for the student-athlete, and his compassion for people have
made him a walking brand of Trevecca Nazarene University. We will miss
his gentle influence and kind smile."
Randy Carden, Professor of Psychology, came to Trevecca to play tennis for Alan Smith. (He Stated,) "Alan is a major reason why I am at Trevecca. He recruited me to play on his tennis team in the late 70's. Soon after my graduation and graduate school, I returned to join the faculty. He has influenced me profoundly as a coach, mentor and close friend. With a quiet humility, Alan has shaped me into a better person. I have witnessed the same effect on scores of others. He continues to maintain relationships with his players around the globe and is deeply loved."
Smith recruited a number of international students to play for his tennis teams. Urban Hammarstedt was an international student who played for Smitty and recently shared this about his time at Trevecca, "I know that if my tracks had not passed through Trevecca, I wouldn't be where I am today. I can't thank you enough for putting up with all of us international players."
Since
his promotion in the fall of 1998, Smith has been a key ingredient in
the school's addition of four sports (men's and women's teams in golf
and soccer) and building two on-campus facilities. Trevecca's softball
and soccer facilities were added, and major improvements were made to
the baseball field. In additions, nearly every athletic team has seen
team and individual records fall over the last three
seasons.
Since
Smith was named Trevecca's athletic director every team has reached
further into the postseason and achieved a higher NAIA ranking than any
previous team has with one exception. The men's basketball team reached
the Elite 8 in 1987, but the last two Trevecca men's basketball teams
have reached the Sweet 16 and achieved the highest ranking in school
history. Trevecca athletes and coaches have set a record for most
conference, regional and national awards in each of Smith's eight
seasons as athletic director.
As
one of the founding members of the TranSouth Conference, Trevecca had
never won a conference championship until the 2004-2005
season. Trevecca collected five banners that year (men's basketball,
baseball regular season, baseball tournament, softball, women's golf).
In the 2005-2006 season Trevecca has added four more conference
championship banners to hang in the rafters of Moore Gym (men's
basketball, softball regular season, softball tournament, women's
golf).
Smith
was inducted into the Trevecca Athletic Hall of Fame in 1993. In 1995
Smith was inducted into the NAIA Hall of Fame. Smith was the first, and
remains the only, person from Trevecca to be inducted into the NAIA
Hall of Fame.
