MILLIGAN COLLEGE, Tenn. - The Trevecca volleyball team (2-0) opened up its season on a positive note, winning its first two matches at Milligan Mountain Madness in Milligan College, Tenn. In its opener, the Trojans defeated Southern Virginia University (0-2) 25-14, 25-17, 16-25, 25-20, and then followed that up with a 25-20, 25-27, 25-21, 25-19 victory over Bryan College (2-1).
"I was very pleased with our team unity, effort levels, and mental toughness," said Trojan Coach Jayme Crowley. "We have a high volleyball IQ for a young team."
Trevecca ended any doubt early with set wins of 25-14 and 25-17. SVU bounced TNU 25-16 in the third set, but Trevecca ended the match in just 57 minutes with a decisive 25-20 score in set four. Senior Brooke Cannon led the way with 26 assists, three aces, and 12 digs. Julie Dimick (15) and Persephonie Devereaux (11) reached double figure kill numbers. Haley Wiggins totaled 16 assists. Cassidy Watkins totalled 10 digs and three aces. Kristen Johnson contributed in nearly ever category. Johnson had eight kills, two assists, seven digs, two blocks, and three block assists.
Bryan College kept things closer in the second game. Trevecca won the first set 25-20, but the Lions answered with a 27-25 win in set two. Trevecca won set three 25-21 and finished another 57 minute game with a 25-19 fourth set win. Haley White was the star defender with 30 digs while Wiggins (14), Sorce (16), and Watkins (11) also hit double figures in digs. Watkins dominited at the net with 22 kills and only three errors for a .311 attack percentage. Wiggins was tops in assists with 29 and had two aces. Devereaux had two blocks and two block assists.
The Trojans return to action Saturday morning when they take on Shorter University (2-0) at 9 a.m. and then they wrap up their weekend of action at 11 a.m. against the host Lady Buffs of Milligan College (0-1).
