NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca (1-0) men's soccer team opened its season at home on Saturday with a win over Montreat College (1-0) the Trojan Soccer Complex.
In the first period the Trojans pushed ahead on a goal from freshman Cole Parrott (Hendersonville) at 26:57. Montreat's goalie Michael Bruce had just saved a shot by Parrot when the freshman fired again from just inside the 18 yard marker to put the Trojans up 1-0. Senior Philip Walker provided the assist.
In the second period the Cavaliers evened the game at 1-1 when Brandon Hageman scored at 60:02 with an unassisted goal from the 18. The Cavaliers tallied 22 shots, 13 on goal, on the afternoon. Trevecca's goalie Hayden Coffman had 12 saves.
Though the Trojans accumulated just seven shots on goal, they found the back of the nets again when freshman Tyler Marshall (Clarksville) scored the game winner at 84:20 to put the Trojans ahead for good at 2-1. Jordan Enix assisted on the goal.
"it is definitely great to see the team rewarded with a win after all the hard work they went through in preseason," said coach Danny Leavy. "It is encouraging that our goals came from freshman and their goals were assisted by upperclassmen. Hayden made some terrific saves in goal today, keeping us in the game at critical times."
"Montreat is a good team that pushed us hard in the second half and made it difficult for us to win."
Trevecca will play in the Becky Fahey Invitational (September 3-4) at Muskingum University in New Concord, Ohio. Becky Fahey is the late mother-in-law of coach Danny Leavy. Fahey, the mother of Leavy's wife Kelly, was a well respected nurse who passed away from cancer. The tournament will raise money in her honor for cancer research. Trevecca will wear pink breast cancer awareness warmups as apart of the event.
Trevecca will face Muskingum University (0-0) at 1 p.m. on Friday (9/3) and Ohio Valley University (0-0) at 11 a.m. on Saturday (9/4).
