LEBANON, Tenn. - The Trevecca volleyball team (7-1) won their seventh straight match, and third in a row at the Cumberland Classic, 3-2 over Campbellsville University (4-2) by the score of 25-22, 25-17, 23-25, 22-25, 16-14. After a season-opening loss to Lindsey Wilson, the Trojans have won seven straight matches.
In set one, Trevecca jumped out to a 5-1 lead. Campbellsville rallied for a 12-11 lead. Neither team would lead by more than one until the Trojans pushed ahead 20-18. CU would never lead again, though they tied the match at 21. In the second set Trevecca started with a 7-2 run and later put the game away with a 5-0 run that pushed their lead to 20-11.
The Tigers controlled the early portion of set three. Trevecca tied the set at 6-6, but the Tigers used a 8-1 run to take a 14-8 lead. CU eventually led 20-13 before the Trojans rallied. Trevecca used a 10-4 run to make it 24-23, but the Tigers stemmed the tied and won 25-24. Set four went the way of the Tigers as well as they pulled ahead 8-4. The Trojans tied it at 20, but CU used a 5-2 run to finish the set and force a fifth and deciding set.
Campbellsville took a 5-0 lead in the fifth set and it looked like the young Trojans were going to waste a 2-0 set lead over the Tigers. With CU leading 7-3, Trevecca mounted a rally outpointing Campbellsville 7-0 for a 10-7 lead. The Trojans would lead the rest of the way for a 16-14 set and match win.
Halley Wiggins had an impressive 47 assists and added four kills, and 13 digs. Kristen Johnson also had contributions in several stat categories. Johnson had eight kills, three service aces, and a team-high 25 digs. Brittany Eller had a team-high 15 kills and added 13 digs. Jenna Robertson had 14 kills and two service aces.
As a team Trevecca had a .414 attack percentage in set two and a .204 percentage overall.
The Trojans will play one more match Saturday, against Union University (4-4) at 5 p.m. Trevecca will hit the road to play the Martin Methodist College RedHawks (-) on Tuesday at 7 p.m. Trevecca's next home match is on Wednesday (9/14) when they host NAIA No. 2 Lee University (4-1) at 6 p.m.
