NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The Trevecca baseball team (7-5-1) parlayed a six-run first inning into a 9-3 win over No. 14 Union University (9-3-1) in the first game of the teams' doubleheader Saturday afternoon at Jackson Field. The teams then had to settle for a 4-4 tie in game two, when play was halted after nine innings due to darkness.
Game 1 Recap
After the Bulldogs took a 1-0 lead in the top half of the first inning on an RBI double by catcher Doug Joyce, the Trojans exploded for six runs in the bottom of the inning, including five with two outs.
Nick Howell led off the inning with a bunt single, and Blake Rogers followed with a walk. After Matt Tidwell lined out to right for the first out of the inning, both runners advance on the first of four Bulldog errors in the game. With Mark Rayburn at the plate, Joyce fired a pickoff attempt down to first that went awry, allowing Howell to advance to third and Rogers to second. Rayburn promptly delivered a sacrifice fly that scored Howell to tie the game, with Rogers advancing to third. But despite the fact that there were two outs, the Trojans were just getting started. Luke Fennell doubled to right-center to bring home Rogers, Trae Weiss doubled to left-center to score Fennell, and Michael Maxwell followed with a triple to drive in Weiss to make it 4-0 Trojans. Caleb Knox reached on an error, scoring Maxwell, and an RBI single by Matt Dobbins capped the scoring for the Trojans.
Union cut it to 6-2 in the fourth inning, but Maxwell gave the Trojans an 8-2 lead with a two-run single in the fifth, and Rayburn drove in his second run of the day with a single in the sixth to finish off the Trojans' scoring for the game.
Righthander Rob Rowland (2-1) pitched a complete game for the victory, allowing three runs on seven hits, with one strikeout and four walks. Will Irvin (2-1) took the loss for the Bulldogs, allowing eight runs on 10 hits in five innings of work.
Maxwell finished 2-for-3 with a triple and three RBI, while Rayburn went 2-for-3 with two RBI. Fennell and Tidwell also added two hits apiece.
Game 2 Recap
The nightcap was a pitchers' duel early, with starters Josh Parker for Trevecca and Jared Davis for Union keeping both offenses off the board for the first three innings.
The Bulldogs broke the scoreless tie with two runs in the fourth, but a sacrifice fly by Fennell in the bottom of the inning and a perfectly executed squeeze bunt by Matt Dobbins in the fifth tied the game 2-2 heading to the sixth inning.
Union re-took the lead with two more runs in the top of the sixth, but again the Trojans responded. Back-to-back sacrifice fly balls by Fennell and Justin Holland made it 4-4 after six innings. Neither team was able to score again, although the Trojans missed a golden opportunity in the bottom of the eighth when they came up empty after loading the bases with nobody out.
Dylan Kuhn and Ryne Rayburn did an excellent job in the late innings out of the Trojan bullpen, shutting down the Bulldogs on just one hit over the final three innings.
Next weekend, the Trojans travel to McKenzie, Tenn., for a three-game series with the Bethel Wildcats (9-7). The series starts with a single, nine-inning game Friday at 2 p.m. and wraps up with a doubleheader Saturday at noon.
