NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Trevecca
(15-8, 8-4 TSAC) hosted conference foe Union University (18-5, 8-3) on Tuesday, taking the bulldogs out three sets to one.
Union jumped ahead
early, starting the first set on a 7-0 run. Trevecca closed to within
two at 9-7, but Union rebounded and stretched the lead back out to
14-9. Trevecca would get no closer than three points (15-12) for the
remainder of the set as Union took the first set 25-19.
Union looked good at
the beginning of the second set, jumping out to a 10-2 lead, but the
Trojans closed to 13-8 with a 6-2 spurt. Jessica Hood then stepped back
and served the Trojans on an 11-0 run, which spanned a Union timeout
and swung all the momentum to the side of the Trojans. Union mustered
just three points the rest of the way, and the Trojans leveled the
match at 1-1.
The third set was a
back and forth affair, with Union taking a 4-1 lead before Trevecca
battled back to tie the match at 6-6. The teams split the next 14
points right down the middle before Union rattled off four in a row to
take a 16-13 lead and force coach Jayme Crowley to spend a timeout. The
move worked, as Trevecca scored eight of the next nine points to take
the lead 21-17. Union would not go away, however, using their own 7-1
run to earn a 24-22 edge, and put the Trojans up against set point.
Aster the Trojans got the serve back, Kelly Huff stepped back and
served the Trojans final three points, as Trevecca took a thrilling
third set 26-24.
Trevecca jumped out
4-1 in the fourth set, but again Union rattled off a big run, this time
8-0, to take the 9-4 lead. The Trojans clawed their way back into the
match though, again out of a timeout, eventually taking the lead 14-13.
The match leveled off again, as the teams continued to battle, and the
final tie score came at 17-17. From there, Trevecca scored eight of the
final 10 points, taking the fourth set, and the match, 25-19. Huff
dished out 41 assists in the match, and Ashton O'Halloran led the
Trojans in kills with 17. Rachel Spotten led the Trojans in hitting
percentage, killing five of her six attempts (.833) and the Trojans hit
.321 as a team.
