NASHVILLE, Tenn. The National Collegiate Athletic Association (NCAA) announced today that Trevecca Nazarene University has successfully completed Year Two of its candidacy and now moves to the third and final stage in its march toward NCAA Division II membership. The association notified Trevecca athletic director Mark Elliott by email Friday morning.  The announcement means the Trojans remain on schedule for full NCAA Division II membership in time for the 2014-2015 athletic season.

Trevecca president Dan Boone expressed his thoughts in the spirit of the baseball season: "Like advancing a runner toward home, Trevecca has hit another solid single and is rounding third base toward home as an NCAA Division II university. Trevecca continues to be measured by the highest standards and has successfully met each one with excellence. I fully expect Trevecca to be in the top tier of Christian universities in NCAA DII within the next few years. Having won the esteemed Presidents' Cup of the G-MAC Conference this past year, Trevecca is well on the way."

The transition process for an institution involves three years of candidacy status prior to becoming an active NCAA Division ll member at the beginning of the fourth year.

Year One is a season of learning, and Year Two is a practice run.  During Year Three, the provisional year, Trevecca and its 15 intercollegiate sports (seven men and eight women) are to operate as an active DII institution in every way.

Athletic director Elliott explained the background of Trevecca's pursuit of this membership. "We have consistently said that the transition to NCAA Division II is more than merely an athletic department decision. It is not just about wins and losses or about how well our teams perform," said Elliott.  "The membership committee specifically pointed out Trevecca's areas of excellence: presidential involvement, institutional control of the athletic department, total university commitment to the development of a culture of compliance throughout, and the University's commitment to the well-being of its student-athletes."

Elliott added, "What I am proudest of is that so many departments across this campus have partnered together to achieve this significant goal.  We're better together and this achievement is shared by many!"

The NCAA monitored Trevecca's progress during the past 12 months before issuing a positive recommendation for the second year in a row.

Trevecca applied for NCAA Division-ll membership in June of 2011, and one month later the NCAA accepted that application and placed Trevecca into the membership process.

During the coming 2013-2014 school year, Trojan teams will participate in their second season as active members of the Great Midwest Athletic Conference (G-MAC), competing for G-MAC championships.

G-MAC commissioner Tom Daeger added, "Trevecca has embraced the requests of the NCAA Division II process and the advancement to provisional member status is a testament to the work put forward to achieving success in the organization. The TNU athletic department excelled during the first year of membership in the G-MAC, including earning the G-MAC Presidents Cup. Combined with the structure developed in the athletic department, Trevecca has proven it is and will be a thriving institution in Division II. We know Trevecca will continue to meet the requirements in the reclassification process during the upcoming provisional membership year and look forward to assisting them meet the expectations for D-II status."

In their first year of G-MAC play, the Trojan athletic teams won four regular season championships and five tournament championships while winning the first-ever G-MAC Presidents' Cup, which is awarded to the most successful overall athletic program. The G-MAC, founded in 2012, has nine members with plans to add more.
