NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - NAIA No. 4 Trevecca (1-0), who finished as the NAIA Runner-Up last
season, opened their basketball season on Saturday with a 78-65 win over No. 21
University of the Cumberlands (0-1) at Moore Gym.
Trevecca opened
the game with a 14-5 run and were never seriously threatened the remainder of
the game. The closest the Patriots would get is eight points (25-17) with 6:00
to go in the first half. Trevecca led 40-26 at the break. After UC scored the
first four points of the second half TNU extended the lead to 17 (50-33) at the
16:20 mark. Trevecca's largest lead was 21 points and held an 15-20 point lead
for most of the rest of the second half. Trevecca would settle for the 13 point
victory.
Abby Lawson
led the Trojans in scoring with 22 points. K.C. Van Atta added 19 points while
Angelica Sails (13) and Jennifer Bognar (11) also reached double figures.
Bognar was the leading rebounder (9) and added a team high two blocks. Casey
Attebery had a team high seven assists and Chelsey Taylor drew five offensive
fouls and collected a team high three steals. Trevecca shot 53% (26-49) from
the field, 43% (6-14) from beyond the arch, and 80% (20-25) from the charity
stripe. TNU outscored UC 38-18 in the paint and 21-16 on points off of
turnovers.
The Trojans
will participate in the Berry College Classic November 6-7 in Rome, Ga.
Trevecca will face Shorter College (0-0) on Friday at 4 p.m. and No. 23 Berry
(0-0) on Saturday at 7 p.m. Berry is picked to finish second in the Southern
States Athletic Conference and received two first place votes. Shorter is
picked fourth in the 11 team conference.
