JACKSON,
Tenn. - The Trevecca volleyball team (22-10) continued to advance through the
TranSouth tournament loser's bracket with a 3-0 shutout of Cumberland
University. Trevecca eliminated the Bulldogs (21-18) 25-18, 25-16, 29-27 and
gained reprisal for the Bulldogs upset win of the Trojans in opening round of
the tournament on Monday.
Cumberland Match Recap
In the
first game of the match Trevecca never trailed and aside from a 5-5 tie the
Trojans led the entire way en route to the 25-18 win. Game two had the same
pattern. The game had just two ties (1-1, 13-13) with Trevecca leading the rest
of the way. After the last tie at 13-13, Trevecca outscored Cumberland 12-3 for
the 25-16 win. Cumberland saw its first lead of the match in game three. CU led
1-0, 2-1, and 3-2 as the match momentum flowed back and forth throughout the
game. Trevecca pulled away to hold a 4-6 point lead until Cumberland rallied
and tied the match four times at 24, 25, 26, and 27 to extend the match. The
Bulldogs weren't able to push through for a lead and fell 29-27.
Kelly Huff,
a first team all-conference selection, led the Trojans with 38 assists and had
11 digs. Kimi Coffey, an honorable mention all-conference selection, had 26
digs to lead the Trojans. Ashton O'Halloran, the TranSouth Newcomer of the
Year, had a team high 12 kills and added 20 digs. Kaley Ward, a first team
all-conference selection, had a attack percentage of 44% with nine kills and
only one error.
Lyon College Match Recap
In
the Trojans second match of the day, the Trojans faced the Lyon College
Pipers (19-12) in an elimination match that the Trojans won in
thrilling, come-from-behind fashion 20-25, 20-25, 25-23, 25-21, 15-10.
Lyon
jumped out 6-3 early in game one and despite a brief Trevecca lead (14-10), the Pipers took the lead for good at 18-17 and held on for the 25-20 win. The Pipers won the first six points in succession to start the second game and took the set 25-20. It appeared Lyon had a
stranglehold on the match. Trevecca took the early lead in game three, stretching it to as many as
seven points at 11-4. Kaley Ward came up with a solo block
that sealed the set for the Trojans at 24-22, en route to the 25-23 set
win. Trevecca took a 7-4
lead in set four, but Lyon battled back with a 5-0 run to reclaim the lead at 9-7. The last Piper lead was 13-12 though as the set
saw five ties, but the Trojans never trailed and won 25-21 setting up a fifth and deciding set. Early in the fifth set, Lyon built a 8-5 lead and when the two teams switched playing areas it was all Trojans. Trevecca took seven of the final nine
points to cap the incredible comeback win 15-10.
Ashton
O'Halloran (18 K, 15 D), Kelly Huff (49 A, 16 D), and Jessica Hood (10
K, 20 D) all posted double-doubles in the match, with Kimi Coffey (27)
and Halley Wiggins (18) also posting double digit digs. In the match,
Huff went over the 1,000 assist mark for the season. Union University Match Recap
JACKSON, Tenn. - The Trevecca volleyball team (22-11) advanced through the TranSouth Athletic Conference volleyball tournament loser's bracket reach the Championship Round. Trevecca faced second seeded Union University (27-7) on the Bulldogs home floor for the chance to advance to the NAIA Volleyball Championships.
Union defeated Trevecca 14-25, 25-18, 23-25, 25-16, 16-14 and advanced to the NAIA Championships. This was the second time in schools history that the Trojans reached the Championship Round of the
TranSouth Tournament.
Union jumped out in set one 10-3 and never allowed the Trojans to get into the game. The 25-14 route spurred the Trojans in game two. Trevecca jumped out 4-1 and returned the favor with a dominating performance. TNU lead 21-13 and closed out the win 25-18. Union never lead in the game. In game three the Trojans never led, but were tied several times. Trevecca closed to within one at 24-23 before seeing the Bulldogs take the win 25-23. With the season on the line the Trojans answered with an emphatic win in game four. Union was tied with Trevecca at four, but the Trojans pulled away and never let the lead slip away. TNU forced a fifth and deciding game with a 25-16 win. Union led for most of the fifth game, but Trevecca rallied to tie the match at 14 before Union scored the two deciding points.
Kelly Huff had 47 assists and 10 digs. Ashton O'Halloran led Trevecca with 23 kills and had 12 digs. Jessica Hood had 22 digs to lead the team. Haley Wiggins had 16 digs.
It's the third season in a row the Trojans have eclipsed the 20 win mark.
