
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NAIA No. 4 Trevecca (4-0) defeated Talladega College (2-4) 77-68 in the opener of the Pops Duncan Classic at Moore Gym.
Trevecca opened the game with an 11-4 run but Talladega closed the gap to 20-14 at the nine minute mark of the first half. Trevecca's largest lead of the half (12 points) came just moments later when the Trojans pulled ahead 28-16 with 6:15 to go. Talladega used a 9-2 run to cut the Trojan lead to just five points (30-25) with 3:08 remaining in the half. Trevecca led 38-31 at the break.
In the second half the Trojans pushed ahead by as many as 18 points (61-43) with 12 minutes remaining in the game. The Tornadoes wouldn't back away and eventually cut the Trojan lead to just eight points (74-66) with a two minutes remaining. Trevecca was able to extend their lead back to nine points for the final margin.
Senior post Jennifer Bognar led the way with 24 points, five rebounds, four, blocks, and a steal. She was 8-for-12 from the field and 7-8 from the foul line. The only other Trojan in double figures was K.C. Van Atta with 15 points. Van Atta led the team with six assists and added four rebounds. Christian Gibson had a team high six rebounds. Abby Lawson led the team with three steals and had two blocks to go along with nine points and four rebounds.
The struggled shooting hitting 23-of-61 (38%) from the field, 8-for-23 (35%) from beyond the three-point arch, and hit 23-of-30 (77%) from the foul line. Talladega outrebounded Trevecca 45-39 and outscored TNU in the paint (34-28), in fast break points (10-2), and second chance points (19-10).The teams were even in points off of tournover (15) and bench (24) scoring.
Trevecca will play Tennessee Wesleyan (4-1) on Saturday at 4:00 p.m.
