
NASHVILLE, Tenn. - NAIA No. 3 Trevecca (10-0, 1-0) opened TranSouth Conference play on Thursday, defeating the No. 9 Freed-Hardeman University Lions (6-4, 0-1) 76-63.
Trevecca opened the game on a 7-0 run, and quickly built an 11-4 lead. The Lady Lions answered with a 9-0 run to take their first lead of the game at 13-11. The teams battled closely for the remainder of the half, with the Lady Lions leading for much of the half and taking a 36-32 lead into the break.
The Trojans scored the first four points of the second half, tying the game. Freed-Hardeman briefly retook the lead at 39-36, but a 6-0 run for Trevecca gave the Trojans a 42-39 lead. The Lions tied the game with a three from Tara Deathridge, but K.C. Van Atta answered immediately, giving the Trojans the 45-42 advantage, a lead they would not relinquish. Trevecca methodically stretched the lead for the remainder of the game, reaching their largest margin of 67-51 with 5:49 to play, en route to the 76-63 win. The win marks the first time the Trojans have won back-to back games against the Lady Lions since February 3 and March 2, 2000.
Jennifer Bognar and Abby Lawson each posted double-doubles, with Bognar recording 23 points and 12 rebounds, and Lawson notching 14 points and 10 rebounds. K.C. Van Atta also scored in double-figures with 15. Lawson recorded team highs in blocks (7), assists (6), and steals (5).
As a team, Trevecca shot 26-of-57 (45.6%) from the floor, 8-of-20 (40%) from long distance, and 16-of-17 (94.1%) from the foul line. Trevecca fell one short of the team record for blocked shots, swatting 12 Lady Lion field goal attempts.
Trevecca will wrap up their first semester schedule December 12 and 13 when they head to Lebanon, Tenn. to take part in Cumberland University's Rosa Stokes Classic. The Trojans will see the Shorter College Lady Hawks (4-4) on Friday the 12th at 4 p.m., and the Covenant College Lady Scots (6-4) on Saturday the 13th at Noon.
