LEBANON, Tenn. - NAIA No. 10 Trevecca (23-6, 12-4 TranSouth)wrapped up their regular season schedule on Saturday at Cumberland University
(8-22, 4-12 TranSouth), taking the game to complete the regular season sweep 64-47.
With the win the Trojans finish third in the TranSouth Regular Season race. Trevecca will host a Quarterfinal Tournament game on Wednesday at 7:30 p.m.
Trevecca has won nine in a row over the Bulldogs and 15 of the last 16 in the series.
Trevecca opened
the game on a 13-1 run, before the Bulldogs cut into the deficit with a
6-0 spurt. With 1:32 left in the Half, the Trojans took their largest
lead of the period when Christian Gibson hit a three-pointer to make it
26-12, and at the break Trevecca led 28-15. The Trojans opened the
second half with a 7-0 run to take the lead out to 20 points at 35-15,
and another 7-0 run for Trevecca made the score 49-25 and gave the
Trojans their largest lead of the game with 11:32 to play. Cumberland
pulled to within nine points at 54-45 with 4:08 remaining, but the
Trojans closed the game on a 10-2 run to take the 64-47 win.
K.C. Van Atta
led the Trojans with 15 points in the game, and she was joined in
double figures by Gibson (13), Abby Lawson (11), and Jennifer Bognar
(10). Lawson grabbed a team high nine rebounds in the game, and
Jennifer Bognar had seven boards, pulling to within five rebounds of
Lindsey Fly's TNU career record of 728. Gibson had four assists, and
Lawson had four steals as well.
As a team,
Trevecca shot 20-of-53 (37.7%) from the floor, 7-of-24 (29.2%) from
behind the arc, and 17-of-23 (73.9%) from the foul line. Trevecca
grabbed 48 rebounds as a team, their highest total in a TranSouth game
since they grabbed 51 against Cumberland on March 1, 2008.
The Trojans will open the TranSouth Conference Tournament on Wednesday March
4th
as the No. 3 seed when they host the Sixth-seeded Martin Methodist RedHawks (19-11, 7-9 TranSouth) at 7:30 p.m.
