St. CATHERINE, Ky. - Trevecca's baseball team (12-10, 2-1 TranSouth) dropped
a 9-8 decision atSt. Catherine (Ky.) (15-3) on Wednesday.
The Patriots put up
two runs in the bottom of the first inning against Trojans' starter
Jeff Hughes to take the early 2-0 lead. In the third, the Trojans tied
the game with a pair of runs, and Trevecca took the lead in the top of
the fourth with two more runs to make the score 4-2. In the bottom of
the fourth, St. Catherine forged ahead, putting up five runs to reclaim
the advantage at 7-4. The Trojans made it 7-6 with single runs in the
fifth and seventh innings, but the Patriots answered with a run in the
bottom of the seventh to stretch the lead back out to two runs at 8-6.
The Trojans again cut the deficit to one with a run in the top of the
eighth and in the top of the ninth, Trevecca loaded the bases with
nobody out, but could muster just one run to tie the game at 8-8. Brent
Amburn got the first two outs of the ninth inning on a double play, but
a single and a walk-off double followed and the Patriots won the game
9-8.
Amburn (0-1) took the
loss for the Trojans, allowing one earned run on two hits in an inning
and two-thirds of work with two strikeouts. Jeff Strong (1-0) threw one
inning and struckout one to pick up the win for the Patriots. Brian
Dirheimer was 2-for-4 with a pair of RBI in the game; Ross Muirhead was
2-for-3 with 2 RBI; Matt Tidwell was 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs
scored; and Trey Morrison was 1-for-5 with a double and an RBI.
Trevecca will hit the
road for their second TranSouth weekend series on Friday when the
Trojans head back to Kentucky to take on the Mid-Continent Cougars
(7-12, 0-0 TranSouth). Game one will be played on Friday night at 6:00
at Brooks Stadium in Paducah, Ky., and the double-header on Saturday
will start at noon in Mayfield, Ky. on Mid-Continent's campus.
