ROME, Ga. - Trevecca's women's golf team is competing in their final regular season tournament on the road in Rome, Georgia.

Playing in blustery and rain-soaked conditions, Birmingham Southern (an NCAA Div. III power) shot a 312 to hold the first-round lead after Monday's play. The two-day, 36-hole tournament is hosted by Berry College on the 5,839-yard, par-72 course at Stonebridge Golf Club. There are a total of nine teams competing and 48 golfers.

The Panthers hold a two stroke lead over tournament hosts Berry and also Savannah College of Art & Design. Both schools shot 315 in the opening round. Berry is ranked No. 7 in the NAIA, while SCAD is tied for No. 13 in the latest poll. Trevecca's team total of 331 has them in sixth place, trailing NCAA D-2 University of West Georgia by three strokes and NAIA #24 Shorter College by four. Trevecca's score was one stroke off of the programs lowest round ever of 330.

The low score of the day was 73, posted by both Rachel Ingram from Lee and Esther Gandarias from Shorter. Trevecca Nazarene's Ashley Birdwell shot a school-record low round of 75 and is third overall. Three players: Julie Donnestad (Lee), Ashley Lovell (Birmingham Southern) and Katina Ruest (SCAD) are tied for fourth place with scores of 76. Lovell is leading the way for Birmingham Southern, which has three players in the top-10 after round-one. Birdwell's 75 was two strokes lower than former Trojan Mindy Seigenthaler 77.

Rounding out the individual scores for Trevecca, Betsy Beaver carded an 82 (T-20), Brooke Dillehay shot 85 (T-29), and Alyssa Moe came in at 89 (#33).Coach Michael Johnson was pleased with his team's play. "I thought the ladies were very competitive today. It was our best round of the year and to see not only Ashley's new record, but to see the other ladies play so well was very gratifying. We hope to come back with an even better performance on Tuesday."

"We're looking forward to defending our conference title next week," said Johnson. "But first we have another round to play in against an excellent field. Berry always does a great job of hosting tournaments and we're happy to be here, in spite of the really wet weather."

Results from round two will be posted at www.tnutrojans.com and in Tuesday's edition of the e-Chronicle.

The TranSouth Tournament will be held at the Greystone Golf Course in Dickson, Tenn. on April 20-21.
