ROME, Ga. - Trevecca's women's golf team completed play in Stonebridge Women's Invitational, their final regular
season tournament on the road in Rome, Georgia.
Trevecca
finished sixth over all with a school-record two-day total of (331-336)
667 and finshed 13 strokes behind NCAA D-2 University of West Georgia
and 18 behind NAIA #24 Shorter College.
Trevecca's round one score was
one
stroke off of the programs lowest round ever of 330.
Birmingham Southern (an
NCAA Div. III power) shot a (312-304) 616 to win the two-day, 36-hole tournament is hosted by Berry
College on the 5,839-yard, par-72 course at Stonebridge Golf Club. There were a total of nine teams competing and 48 golfers.
The
Panthers won by 11 strokes over NAIA No. 13 Savannah College of Art
& Design who posted a (315-312) 627. Berry, ranked No. 7 in the
NAIA, finisned in third place with a (315-314) .
Trevecca Nazarene's Ashley Birdwell shot
a school-record low round of 75 on Monday and was third overall through round one. Birdwell's 75 was two strokes lower than former
Trojan Mindy Seigenthaler 77. For the tournament, Birdwell shot a (75-81) 156 to finish ninth overall.
Rounding
out the individual scores for Trevecca, Betsy Beaver carded an (82-83) 165
(T-22), Brooke Dillehay shot (85-87) 172 (T-30), and Alyssa Moe came in at (89-85) 174
(#32).
Coach
Michael Johnson was pleased with his team's play. "I
thought the ladies were very competitive this week. It was our best
performance of the year as we posted a program record two-day score!"
Lee
University's Rachel Ingram fired back-to-back rounds of 73 and finished
as the tournament low-medalist with a two over-par score of (73-73)
146. Shorter's Esther Gandarias finished with a score of (73-76) 149
and finished tied with Kelley Burgess (77-72) for second place.
"Our
play as a team has improved throughout the year, in particular the last
two outings. We're looking forward to defending our conference title
next week. We have played on a variety of courses, in tough weather
conditions, and against Nationally Ranked teams in preparing for the
TranSouth Tournament and an opportunity to reach the NAIA Tournament,"
said Johnson.
The TranSouth Tournament will be held at the Greystone
Golf Course in Dickson,
Tenn. on
April 20-21. The winner will advance to the NAIA National Tournament.
Trevecca has won the last four TranSouth Tournament titles.
