BETHANY, Okla. - NAIA No. 13 Trevecca (4-1) defeated No. 15 Southern
Nazarene University (6-2) 70-67 on the road in the final game of the
Southern Nazarene Classic.
Trevecca now holds a 6-3 advantage in the series with the Crimson Storm.
Southern Nazarene started fast with a 11-4 start through the first
2:16 of the game. By the time the game reached the 15:29 mark of the
first half SNU had pushed their lead to 10 (17-7) and looked in control
of the game. Trevecca started to work the lead down over the next six
minutes of play and were trailing on three points (23-20) with 9:57 to
play in the half. Neither team would score again until Trevecca cut the
lead to one at the 6:44 mark. Casey Pigue then hit a layup and was
fouled. Pigue hit the bonus free throw and put the Trojans up for the
first time in the game. SNU and Trevecca traded baskets for most of the
remainder of the first half with the Trojans holding a two point
(34-32) lead at the half.
Trevecca continued building their lead early in the second half
and peaked with a 12 point (46-34) advantage at the 15:44 mark in the
second half. The Trojans still held a double digit lead (61-51) with
6:44 to go. That's when SNU began to cut into the TNU advantage. The
Crimson Storm scored six straight to cut the lead to just four points
at the 5:16 mark. Trevecca built the lead to nine (68-59) before SNU
cut into the lead again, this time the Crimson Storm cut the lead to
three, but the Trojans held on for the 70-67 victory.
K.C. Van Atta led four Trojans in double-figures with 18.
Christian Gibson (17), Abby Lawson (12), and London Elie (10) joined
Van Atta in double-figures. Angelica Sails was tops in rebounding with
12. Gibson added team-high totals in assists (5) and steals (7). Van
Atta also added four steals and six rebounds.
As a team Trevecca shot 42% (26-62) from the field, 33% (7-21)
from three-point range, and 78% (11-14) from the foul line. Trevecca
only had 11 turnovers and .
Trevecca will participate in the North Georgia College Chick-fil-a
Classic over Thanksgiving weekend. Trevecca will face Erskine College
(1-0) on Friday at 3 p.m. and North Georgia (1-2) on Saturday at 3 p.m.
