PARK, Fla. - The Trevecca (8-1) men's basketball team defeated NAIA DII
#RV Webber International (4-3) 74-73 in the first of two games with Sun
Conference schools in Florida this weekend.
Trevecca
came out on fire from deep four early three-pointers to take a 16-10
lead with 12 minutes to go in the half. The Trojans extended the lead
to eight points (25-17) with nine minutes remaining in the half. A 7-0
Warrior run made it 25-24 Trojans with 4:30 remaining in the half.
Michael France drained a three to put the Trojans up 28-24. The
Warriors tied the game at 28, but Matthew Elliott hit his third three
of the first half to put the Trojans up 31-28 with less than three on
the clock. Trevecca would go on to hold a 36-35 lead at the half.
Trevecca hit 7-of-13 from three-point range in the first half. Elliott
led the team with 13 first half points.
Trevecca
opened a seven point (45-38) lead early in the first half. Keith Morris
hit a pair of free throws and hit the 10-point mark to give the Trojans
the advantage. Morris later hit a jumper to put the Trojans up 51-42,
the largest lead of the game. Trojans extended the lead to 57-46 at the
11 minute mark on a Marquis Rudolph break away bucket. The Warriors
used the home court advantage to tie the game at 65 with 3:47 to go in
the game. Matthew Elliott took the ball down court and drew a foul that
sent him to the line for a pair. The senior from Spring Hill, Tenn.
sank one and gave the Trojans the lead again at 66-65. With 40 seconds
remaining J.P. Nyadaro stole the ball and was fouled. The freshman from
Nairobi, Kenya hit a pair to put the Trojans up 70-67. Matthew Elliott
hit a pair of free throws with 15 seconds to go, just before the
Warriors to hit a three-pointer with :07 remaining to close the gap to
just two (72-70) points. Another freshman, Peyton Henry from Franklin,
Tenn., hit a pair of free throws to give the Trojans a four (74-70)
edge again with 6.7 seconds, but the Warriors drained another three
with 1.4 seconds remaining. The Trojans were able inbound the ball and
run out the clock to secure a 74-73 victory.
Matthew
Elliott led Trevecca with 24 points with three 3-pointers and three
steals. Keith Morris added 18 points on 7-of-13 shooting. The team shot
56% from the field and were 7-of-15 from beyond the three-point arch.
TNU struggled from the foul line hitting just 13-of-24.
On Saturday Trevecca will face NAIA DII #19 Warner University (3-1) at 5 p.m. in Lake Wales, Fla.
