DAYTONA BEACH, Fla. - NAIA No. 16 Trevecca (7-3) defeated Brenau University (7-3) 79-70 at the Ocean Center in the Daytona Beach Shootout.
Trevecca,
playing without two starters, used a 15-0 run at the end of the first
half and the beginning of the second half to fuel their 79-70 win over
Brenau at the Daytona Beach Shootout. Trevecca was playing without
London Elie and Angelica Sails due to academic work they are finishing
up before the second semester begins in January.
Brenau, a women's college in Gainsville, Ga., scored the game's first
seven points, Trevecca didn't score their first basket until K.C. Van
Atta hit a jumper at the 17:15 mark of the first half. After tying the
game at 7-7, the Trojans fell behind again, eventually trailing by 12
(33-21) with 6:07 remaining in the half. Trevecca used a 10-0 run to
make it a two-point (33-31) game with 3:50 remaining. Trevecca took
their first lead (40-38) of the game on a first half ending
three-pointer from Casey Pigue, concluding a 6-0 Trevecca run.
Trevecca continued the momentum to start the second half with a 9-0 run
and led 49-38 with 17:49 to go in the game. The Tigers, who play in the
Southern States Athletic Conference, used several three-point bombs to
rally and take a 58-57 lead with 10:57 to go. Brenau extended their run
(27-12) and lead to four points (65-61) with 7:37 to go. Trevecca
regained the lead only to see Brenau tie the game at 67 (4:43) Trevecca
then scored eight straight to take a 75-67 lead. The Trojans went on to
claim the 79-70 victory.
Three Trojans reached the double figure scoring mark with K.C. Van Atta
leading the way with 16 points. Paige McFarlin added 15 and Christian
Gibson scored 14. Casey Pigue, who scored nine points, grabbed a
team-high 10 rebounds. McFarlin added nine rebounds while Lawson had
seven boards. Lawson and Van Atta had three steals a piece. Lawson also
had a team-high two blocks. Gibson and Lawson led the team with six
assists each.
As a team the Trojans shot 46% (29-63) from the field, 29% (8-27) from
three-point range, and 54% (13-24) from the foul line. Trevecca had 42
rebounds and 16 turnovers. Brenau had 38 rebounds and 16 turnovers. The
Tigers hit 9-of-23 three-pointers for the game.
On Tuesday, December 29 Trevecca will have a lunch time game with No. 18 Wayland Baptist (6-4) at Noon.
