NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - NAIA No. 16 Trevecca (8-4, 1-0) defeated Mid-Continent
University (1-11, 0-1) 99-36 on Thursday at Trevecca's Moore Gym - it
was the first TranSouth action of the year for both teams.
The
Trojans jumped out to a 10-2 lead, while forcing 21 first half
turnovers, and never looked back in route to an easy win over the
Cougars. The Trojans led 44-13 at the half, and then proceeded to hit
nine of their first 11 shots of the second half, including 4-4 from
3-point range to push the lead to 66-21 putting them on track for their
first win of 2010.
For the game, the Trojans forced 37 Cougar turnovers, largely on the strength of 27 steals, which led to 34 TNU points.
All
thirteen players who dressed saw action, and twelve of those players
cracked the scoring column. Pre-season all-conference guard Abby Lawson
led all scorers with 16 points, and also contributed six rebounds,
three assists, and six steals. Christian Gibson was the only other
Trojan in double figures, with 13 points. K.C. Van Atta, Lauren Wasson,
and Kristin Majors all added nine points apiece, while Paige McFarlin,
Chelsey Taylor, Jessica Spencer, and Shenita Gleaves scored eight
points each for a balanced Trojan offense.
The
Trojans outrebounded Mid-Continent 44-37, led by seven rebounds from
Jessica Spencer. Abby Lawson and Lauren Wasson added six rebounds
apiece. K.C. Van Atta led the way with five assists, and Abby Lawson
had six steals. The Trojans shot 54% from the field for the game,
including 11-18 (61%) from 3-point range. Mid-Continent made just 14 of
56 shots (25%), including only 3-20 (15%) from 3-point range.
The
Trojans return to action Saturday afternoon, January 9th, at 2:00 as
they travel to Blue Mountain (7-7) to face the Toppers.
