NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - No. 17 Trevecca (11-4, 4-0 TSAC) survived an off shooting day
to outlast Cumberland (7-6, 1-3 TSAC) 61-50 in TranSouth conference
action Saturday at Moore Gym.
It
was the seventh win the last eight tries for the Trojans. Trevecca has
an 18-10 all-time advantage in the series with the Bulldogs and have
won 18 of the last 19 meetings, including the last 11. Trevecca coach
Gary Van Atta earned his 51st TranSouth win in just his fifth season at
Trevecca. He now owns a 51-17 record in TranSouth play.
The
Trojans shot just 40% from the field (22-55), including 3 of 17 (18%)
from 3-point range, but held the Bulldogs to 32% shooting (16-50),
forced 22 turnovers, and outrebounded Cumberland 41-36 to notch the
win.
The
Trojans jumped out to an early lead and maintained it throughout the
first half, culminating with Casey Pigue's 3-pointer at the buzzer to
send Trevecca to the locker room with a 32-18 lead.
The
margin grew to 20 early in the 2nd half, at 47-27, before Cumberland
began to chip away, mainly from the free throw line, where the Bulldogs
made 12 of 17 in the 2nd half. The game was very physical, with a
total of 44 fouls called, leading to a combined 47 free throw attempts
between the two teams.

Van Atta led the way for the Trojans with 14 points, and added five
rebounds, two blocks, and two steals. Christian Gibson was the only
other Trojan in double figures, with 11 points, and she added four
assists. Abby Lawson had a great all-around floor game, with nine
points, nine rebounds, five blocks, and three steals.
Keshia Brown of Cumberland led all scorers with 16 points, while teammate Allysia Bailey added 11.
The
Trojans return to action Monday night at Moore Gym, as they host a
crucial contest with No. 6 Freed-Hardeman (13-2, 1-1 TSAC) at 6pm.
