NASHVILLE,
Tenn. - No. 14 Trevecca (12-4, 4-0 TSAC) defeated Cumberland University
(5-11, 2-2 TSAC) 74-67 in TranSouth conference play at Moore Gym.
Trevecca senior Matthew Elliott surpassed the 1000 career point mark in
the win. He did so when he hit his fourth 3-pointer of the game.
The
win is the fourth in a row for the Trojans, who have now equalled their
win total for last season with 12 wins. Trevecca now has a 36-21
advantage in the series with Cumberland. The win breaks CU's three-game
win streak in the series.
Cumberland
opened the game with a 7-0 lead and held the lead until the 4:13 mark
of the first half when J.P. Nayadaro blocked a Haris Batalevic jumper
in the lane and Matthew Elliott drove down the court before kicking it
out to Michael France, who drained a go-ahead (22-21) 3-pointer.
Trevecca outscored CU 8-4 to end the half and led 30-25 at the break.
The
Bulldogs rolled back with an 8-2 run to start the second half and took
a 1-point (33-32) lead. Trevecca answered quickly with an 11-0 run and
pushed its lead to 10 points (43-33) when Michael France finished a
fastbreak with a dunk. Trevecca eventually extended its lead to 18
points (60-42) with 8:23 remaining when JP Nyadaro scored on a field
goal. The freshman's field goal capped a 15-2 run.
CU
used a 12-2 run to cut the TNU led to just eight points (62-54) with
4:25 to go. Trevecca slowed the Cumberland run enough to hold on for
the 7-point (74-67) win.
Michael
France (20), Matthew Elliott (19), Keith Morris (14), and Marquise
Rudolph (11) all reached double-figure scoring totals. Elliott, who had
28 points in Trevecca's win on Thursday at Bethel, nearly produced a
triple-double with eight rebounds and eight assists. He also was
credited with a block and hit 4-6 from 3-point range. France tallied
six rebounds while JP Nyadaro led the team with nine rebounds. Nyadaro
had two blocks and two steals and added eight points.
As
a team Trevecca hit 24-54 (44%) from the field, 6-12 (50%) from 3-point
range, and 20-29 (69%) from the foul line. CU had a 41-37 edge in
rebounding
CU's
Springer came one point short of tying a career high with 36 points and
pulled down 10 boards for his 11th double-double of the year and fourth
straight. The game was a matchup between the current TranSouth
Co-Players of the Week as Springer and France earned the honor Monday.
France finished with 20 points to lead the Trojans.
Trevecca will play its third game in five days when they host Freed-Hardeman (8-7, 1-1 TSAC) on Monday at 8 p.m.
