LEBANON,
Tenn. - The Trevecca Trojans (17-8, 8-4 TranSouth), #RV in this week's
NAIA men's Division I basketball poll, never led in falling to
Cumberland (10-14, 7-4) 79-49.
Cumberland led 8-6, but used a
14-0 run to build a 22-6 advantage. Cumberland led by 20 points on
three occassions in the first half, the last was at the 6:12 mark
(37-17). It was then that Trevecca used a 10-0 run to cut the lead in
half at 37-27. Trevecca had several chances to cut the lead into single
digits, but the Bulldogs stood strong. The TNU rally was short lived as
CU outscored TNU 8-2 over the final 3:40 of the first half and led
45-29 at the break.
The Bulldogs built a 25-point lead with a
12-3 run to start the second half. Trevecca clipped the lead to 16
(61-45) with 11:47 to go, but could get no closer. Cumberland used a
12-0 run to take a 28-point (73-45) lead and held the Trojans scoreless
for nearly six minutes.
The 49 points is the lowest for the
Trojans in more than three years. The last time Trevecca scored less
than 50 point was on November 11, 2006 when they defeated Taylor
University 48-37. Trevecca scored just 20 points in the second half.
Cumberland,
a team that normally shoots 27% from 3-point range, went 7-of-12 from
behind the arc in the first half and added two more treys after
halftime, shooting 45 percent against the nation's third-best defensive
3-point team. The Trojans had been holding opponents to 28 percent.
Jeremy
Dixon led Trevecca with 16 points, 12 came in the first half. Michael
France added 14 points. The Trojans were outrebounded 43-24, Cumberland
had 19 offensive rebounds. France led Trevecca with four rebounds.
Marquise Rudolph led the team with four assists. Keith Morris, who had
eight points - all in the first half, led the team with two blocks.
As
a team Trevecca shot 36% (20-55) from the field, 20% (5-25) from
3-point range, and 80% (4-5) from the foul line. Trevecca entered the
game as the NAIA's top 3-point shooting team at 42.7% and ranked No. 16
in field goal shooting percentage at 48%.
CU's Brandon
Springer pulled down a career-high 16 rebounds and scored 26 points to
lead Cumberland University. The double-double marked the 16th of the
year.
Trevecca has three remaing home games, the next is Monday when the Trojans host Lyon College (5-19, 1-11 TranSouth) at 8 p.m.
