FLORENCE, Ala. - Trevecca (4-0) rallied for a pair of road wins over NCAA D2 North Alabama (7-7) using a grand slam to rally for a 5-4 win in the first contest, then forced extra innings in a 2-1 victory in the nightcap. Trevecca has changed the time of its next game, Thursday's game with Covenant will now start at 2 p.m.
In the first game, Trevecca only got four hits, but one of them was the slam as the Trojans posted the 5-4 victory. UNA entered the top of the fifth with a 1-0 lead, but trailed 4-1 going into the bottom of the inning. After the team drew three walks, Trevecca's Kelsey Lantrip connected on the four-run shot to center field.
The Trojans added a run in the top of the seventh, which proved to be the game-winner after UNA mounted a rally in the bottom of the inning that fell one run short. Jennifer Sharp recorded a three-run homer to make the score 5-4, but the Lions could not push another run across the plate.
Riley Mashburn (2-0) got the win for Trevecca with seven innings of work. Mashburn allowed seven hits, four runs (one earned) and three walks while striking out two. Trevecca had four hits and one error. Lantrip was 1-4 with four RBI and a run scored. Lauren Baker added a 1-4 performance with an RBI. Megan Hemmingsen scored both runs, but didn't have an official at bat.
In game two, Trevecca saw North Alabama take a 1-0 lead with a run in the second inning. Trevecca trailed until the top of the seventh when Megan Hemmingsen doubled with one out. Hemmingsen advanced to third on a wild pitch, then scored on another. The Lions failed to score in the seventh sending the game to extra innings. In the ninth Trevecca's Caitlyn Bailey was placed on second. Hemmingsen advanced Bailey to second with a sac bunt. Brooke Brennan followed with a line out to center field that was deep enough for Bailey to cross the plate. The Trojans held in the bottom half for the win.
Lauren Baker (2-0) pitched a complete game for the win while allowing just four hits and two walks while striking out eight Lions. At the plate Monica West continued her hot start with a 2-3 game and Melinda Patterson was 2-4. Hemmingsen was 1-3 with a double and a run scored. Anais Puertas was 1-4 with a double. Kelsey Lantrip was 0-2 at the plate, but had three walks and a stolen base.
Trevecca had seven hits and no errors.
Trevecca will take on Covenant College (0-2) on Thursday, February 25 at 2 p.m. That is a change from the previously announced 4 p.m. start time.
