NASHVILLE,
Tenn. No. 17 Trevecca (19-9, 10-5 TranSouth) suffered a 68-61 Senior
Night defeat at the hands of No. 1 Union University (29-1, 16-0
TranSouth) Thursday night at Moore Gym. Union now leads the all-time
series 31-6, and has won 10 straight over the Trojans.
On a
night when seniors Abby Lawson and Christian Gibson were honored during
their final regular season appearance at Moore Gym, the Trojans put
forth a valiant effort before falling just short in the end. Union
scored the first five points of the game and never trailed, leading by
13 on two different occasions in the first half before taking a 39-27
lead into the locker room.
It was more of the same in the
second half, with the lead growing to 15 on two Lavanda Ross free
throws with 17:02 left. The Trojans continued to battle, though,
eventually getting to within 59-55 on a K.C. Van Atta 3-pointer with
5:52 to play. The Trojans even closed the gap to three on two separate
occasions, but could get no closer as the defending National Champions
held on for the victory.
Neither team shot particularly well
from the field, with the Trojans hitting 23-63 (36.5%), while Union
made only 23-68 (33.8%). Trevecca knocked down 7 of 23 (30.4%)
3-pointers, while Union was 7 of 27 (25.9%) from deep. Union made 15 of
17 free throws (88.2%), while the Trojans made just 8 of 14 (57.1%).
K.C.
Van Atta led all scorers with 15 points, and added eight rebounds,
while Abby Lawson added 13 points, four rebounds, and six assists.
Christian Gibson chipped in with 11 points, four rebounds, two assists,
and three steals.
The Trojans wrap up the regular season Saturday afternoon at Martin Methodist (16-13, 7-8). Game time is 2pm.
