NASHVILLE, Tenn. - Trevecca (5-5), receiving votes for the preseason NAIA Baseball Top 25, returned to Jackson Field on Friday and captured a pair of wins from Bethel (0-2) of Indiana.
In the opener Trevecca's Trae Weiss reached on an error then advanced all the way to third on a wild throw. A batter later Weiss scored on Mark Hewitt ground out. Zack Sutton reached with two outs and advanced to second on a single by Trey Morrison. Brad Gooch tripled to drive in Sutton and Morrison. The next two batters (Chad Reynolds and Luke Fennell) walked to load the bases. Chase Birwell singled to drive in Gooch and Reynolds. Trevecca added thre more runs in the second to take a 8-0 lead. Trevecca allowed a run in the sixth and the Pilots made things interesting with four in the seventh.
Trevecca's Tim Dunn (2-1) picked of the win in game one, going five innings. Dunn allowed two hits and walked one while striking out five. Jeff Hughes and Codi Webb closed out the final two innings on the mound. Gooch was 2-3 with a run scored, a triple, and four RBI. Trey Morrison was 2-4 with two runs scored. Chase Birdwell was 1-3 with two RBI.
In the second game Trevecca fell behind 1-0 when Bethel scored a run in the top of the third. Trevecca answered with a pair of runs in their half of the inning. Weiss and Edwin Borbon walked to lead off the inning. The next two Trojans popped out, but Morrison and Gooch followed with singles to drive in Weiss and Borbon respectively. Each team scored a run in the fourth, giving the Trojans a 3-2 advantage. Trevecca added another run in the fifth and sixth to seal the win.
Michael Son (1-0) was in control throughout the complete game. Over seven innings Son allowed seven hits and two runs, one earned. The junior college transfer struck out eight. Borbon was 2-3 with two runs scored. Morrison was 3-4 with a triple, a run scored, and two RBI. Gooch was 2-3 with a double and a RBI.
The teams will play a single game at 11 a.m. on Saturday.
Trevecca will visit No. 11 Tennessee Wesleyan (8-3) on Tuesday for a 1 p.m. game and then host St. Catherine (2-3) for a game on Wednesday at 2 p.m.
