JAMUL, Calif. - The Trevecca men's golf team completed play in the PLNU/Smee Builders Invitational at Steele Canyon Golf Course on Tuesday. There were 13 teams and 68 golfers competing on the 6834 yard course that played to a par of 71.
The Trojans posted a first round 321 and then carded a 310 in the afternoon round on Monday for a Day One total of 631. On Tuesday the Trojans fell back to a 328 and finished the tournament with a three round total of 959, finishing 12th.
Grant Moffett, of nearby San Diego, Calif., led the Trojans effort with a three-day total of (81-78-78) 237 and finished in 37th.
The other Trojan scorers were Joey Bradley who tied for 40th (82-76-80) at 238. Skip Jones (79-76-86) 341, David Saldana (79-80-84) 243, and William Potts finished at (88-89-87) 264.
The tournament was loaded with five teams currently ranked in the top 25. No. 6 Holy Names, No. 14 Wayland Baptist, No. 19 Victoria, No. 23 Cal Baptist, and #RV Cal State-San Marcos.
Ironically, an unranked team, the host Sea Lions prevailed at their own invitational. PLNU held a five-stroke lead after Monday's two rounds and sealed the win with their best round of the season on Tuesday. PLNU posted scores of 296 and 300 to take a modest lead over the field on Monday, then shot a one-over 285 on Tuesday for a three-round 881 total, 20 better than Wayland Baptist's 901. Victoria placed third (904), with CSU San Marcos (905) and Holy Names rounding out the top-five.
PLNU's Ryan Ellerbrock expanded his one shot lead after 36 holes of play and won the tournament by five strokes, tallying 73, 72 and 70 for a plus-two 215 total. Teammate Zane Keith tied for second (76-75-69--220) thanks to a tournament low 69 over the final 18 holes of competition. Garrett True of Holy Names and Jarred Callbeck of Victoria also shot 220 for the tournament. In fifth was Jordan Andrews of The Master's College (221).
The Trojans will host the Trevecca Spring Invitational at Old Hickory C.C. in Old Hickory, Tenn. on March 22-23. The team is looking for volunteers to help with the operation of the tournament.
