BARBOURVILLE, Ky. - The Trojan baseball team (28-19, 6-9 TranSouth) rallied to tie the game at two, but Union College (33-13) scored a pair of runs in the eighth for the 4-2 win. The Bulldogs are recieving votes for the NAIA Top 25.
The Trojans drew first blood as Matt Tidwell, the TranSouth Player of the Week, led off the game with a triple and then scored on an Edwin Borbon sac fly for a 1-0 lead. Union tied it in the second when Brandon Hedrick led off with a double and later came home on a Longbrake two-out single. The Bulldogs grabbed a 2-1 edge in the fifth when Demetrius Davis singled in Longbrake.
Trevecca evened the ledger in the seventh thanks to an error. Pinch-hitter Trae Weiss led off with a double and moved to third on a sac bunt, Brad Gooch attempted a squeeze bunt to get Weiss home. However, the ball went to pitcher Blaine Adams and had Weiss dead at the plate but an errant throw allowed the run to score to make it 2-2.
In the eighth, Union loaded the bases with no outs thanks to three consecutive walks. Troy Sitton followed with a single up the middle, scoring Ryan Satterlee (Youngstown, Ohio) and Brian Mouton (Oakland, Calif.) for the 4-2 advantage.
The Trojan offense practically began and ended with Tidwell, who went 3-for-4 with a triple and a run scored. The rest of the Trevecca Nazarene lineup went a combined 3-for-24. Trevecca had six hits and one error.
Sitton was the bulk of the Union offense as he finished the day 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Josh Longbrake helped out with a 2-for-3 performance as he drove in one run. Union had nine hits and two errors.
Even though 14 total pitchers were used, the game turned into a pitchers' duel. Union used nine hurlers with only Koby Hearn going more than an inning. Hearn tossed 1 1/3 innings of perfect ball in collecting the win, improving to 3-2 on the season
As a staff, the Bulldogs gave up two runs, one earned, on six hits, two walks and one hit batter with six strikeouts.
Conversely, Trevecca Nazarene utilized five pitchers and surrendered four earned runs on nine hits and three walks with seven strikeouts. Cobi Webb suffered the loss, dropping him to 1-1 on the season. Webb allowed two earned runs on two hits and three walks in an inning of work.
Trevecca will conclude the week by hosting a three-game weekend series with No. 13 Union University (33-12, 10-4 TranSouth) at Jackson Field. The series opener is Friday at 2 p.m., with a doubleheader Saturday at Noon. Saturday will be Senior Day for Trevecca's five senior baseball players - Trey Morrison, Brad Gooch, Tim Dunn, Chris Sutherland, and Jerry Young.
