NASHVILLE, Tenn. - The 2007-2008 Trojan basketball team had one goal in mind, to return to the NAIA National Tournament. The seniors looked to become the first Trojan class to reach the ultimate goal three of their four years at Trevecca.
Trevecca opened the season with eight consecutive wins that propelled them No. 7 in the NAIA's first regular season coaches poll. In the run the Trojans knocked off preseason No. 13 Illinois Springfield as well as receiving votes Voorhees, national tournament qualifier Cumberlands, and perennial Canadian power Simon Fraser.
Trevecca entered conference play with an 8-1 record. Their only blemish was a two point loss to University of Victoria. Trevecca opened conference play with four wins. They opened with a win at receiving votes Freed-Hardeman and a thrilling double-overtime win at preseason No. 2 Crichton College in Memphis. Josh Helton scored a career high 34 points in the game. The Trojans also pulled off a win over No. 20 Union University at Moore Gym during the four-game conference streak.
Trevecca's only lull in the season came during a difficult mostly road swing. After playing three of their first four conference games on the road, Trevecca hosted No. 12 Lambuth and took their first conference loss of the season. TNU bounced back with a win at Lyon College in Batesville, Arkansas. TNU traveled from Batesville all the way to Indianapolis, Ind. to play fellow Nazarene college Olivet Nazarene University at Conseco Fieldhouse. The Tigers, who reached the NAIA tournament again in 2008, took a hard fought four-point victory over the road weary Trojans. After a brief stop in Nashville, the Trojans visited No. 25 Martin Methodist and fell for the second consecutive game. The No. 8 Trojans wouldn't lose two in a row the remainder of the season.
Now ranked No. 12 the Trojans would win four in a row including a road win at No. 16 Cumberland and an overtime win at home over Freed-Hardeman.
Trevecca ended the regular season by winning three of the final four. Their lone loss was on the road at receiving votes Union University, but included a win over receiving votes Cumberland. Trevecca finished the regular season in third place with a 14-6 record.
Trevecca started the TranSouth tournament with a 22-8 record and promptly added two more wins to their totals to reach the championship game. Trevecca defeated Crichton College in the quarterfinals then bounced No. 11 Martin Methodist on the road. Trevecca fell in the championship game at No. 11 Lambuth.
Their 24-9 overall record and No. 19 ranking was enough to secure Trevecca a bid to the NAIA National Tournament, but they earned an automatic bid with their berth into the championship game. It would mark the first time a Trojan senior class had reached the NAIA Tournament in three of their four years of play.
Trevecca received the No. 16 seed in the NAIA Tournament and faced No. 17 seed University of Mobile in the opening round. The Trojans defeated Mobile 67-58 and earned a game with No. 1 Georgetown College. The Trojans would battle the Tigers for 40 minutes, but in the final seconds undefeated Georgetown pulled out a two point victory.
The loss ended what was one of the most successful seasons in Trevecca basketball history.
Brian Oduor and Marcos Salvi both surpassed the 1,000 career scoring mark during the season and joined teammates Collins Onyando and Josh Helton in the 1,000 point club.
Trevecca's Sam Harris picked up career coaching win No. 400 during the season. Harris has now led Trevecca to the NAIA National Tournament on four occasions in his 15 seasons. This was his 25th season as a head men's basketball coach.
