2010 Women's Golf Season Review

TranSouth Tournament:  Beaver 5th (of 22), Team 2nd (of 4)
NAIA National Qualifier:  Beaver 10th (of 47), Team 6th (of 10)

Trevecca's women's golf team began the 2009-2010 campaign as the five-time defending champion of the TranSouth Conference Tournament in search of its sixth title in a row. The team returned three of its players from the previous year's squad, including seniors Betsy Beaver and Alyssa Moe.

The season consisted of six regular-season tournaments, the first of which was the Walsh University Fall Classic at The Sanctuary Golf Club in North Canton, Ohio, in mid-September. The Trojans placed second (of 10). Sophomore Ashley Birdwell was the highest-finishing Trojan, shooting a two-day total of 164 to tie her for fourth place in a field of 59 golfers. Betsy Beaver was the opening-day leader with a 79 and finished in sixth place, only a stroke behind Birdwell (165).

The Trojans next traveled to Rome, Georgia, for the Chick-fil-A Collegiate Invitational, hosted by Berry College at the Stonebridge Golf Club. Trevecca managed an eighth place team finish in a 13-team field. Individually, Betsy Beaver shot a two-day total of 163 to finish in a tie for 18th in a field of 71 golfers.

The Trojans hosted the Trevecca Fall Invitational, October 12-13, at the Old Hickory (Tenn.) Country Club. Six quality teams, led by annual NAIA-powerhouse Lindsey Wilson College, participated. Trevecca finished 4th, and again it was Betsy Beaver leading the Trojans individually with a 158 to finish the two-day event in sixth place.

Trevecca wrapped up the fall portion of its schedule with a trip to the Mobile Invitational at the Azalea City Course in Mobile, Alabama. In a field of seven teams and 40 golfers, the Trojans finished fifth, with Betsy Beaver the top Trojan, shooting a two-day total of 163, good for seventh place.

The spring schedule began with another trip to Rome, Georgia., this time for the Berry College Women's Invite at the Coosa Country Club, a tournament which featured fellow TranSouth competitors Bethel and Martin Methodist among a strong 15-team field. The Trojans finished in 10th place, with Ashley Birdwell shooting 84-86-170 to tie individually for 23rd among 84 participants.

Trevecca next headed to the Wilmington Island Club in Savannah, Georgia, the site of the Savannah College of Arts and Design Spring Invitational, March 29-30. The Trojans struggled, finishing 13th out of 14 teams. But there was a good sign for the future in the form of freshman Whitney Phillips, the highest-finishing Trojan for the first time in her young career. Phillips shot a two-round total of 183 to finish 58th of 81 golfers in the tournament.

The TranSouth Tournament was up next on the schedule, April 12-13 at Pickwick Landing State Park in Pickwick Dam, Tennessee. The Trojans' five-year run of conference tournament championships came to an end, however, when Bethel took home the team title, with the Trojans second in the four-team field. Betsy Beaver again led the Trojans, finishing in fifth place to earn all-conference honors. The other Trojan golfers in the event were Maddie Privott (9th), Alyssa Moe (10th), Ashley Birdwell (t-12th), and Whitney Phillips (14th).

The final event of the season for the Trojan women's golfers was the NAIA Unaffiliated National Tournament Qualifier at Bull Creek East Golf Course in Midland, Georgia. The Trojans finished sixth in a 10-team field, with Betsy Beaver shooting a pair of matching 84s for a two-day total of 168, good for 10th place among a field of 47 golfers.

Beaver's performance at that final tournament wrapped up an outstanding career for the Dayton, Ohio, native: a four-time All-TranSouth selection, a three-time TranSouth Scholar-Athlete, a two-time NAIA Scholar-Athlete, and the 2007 TranSouth Conference Tournament Medalist. Beaver was Trevecca's top finisher in five of the eight events played during 2009-10, and she finished second among Trojans in the other three tournaments.

Alyssa Moe also saw her three-year career at Trevecca come to an end. Aside from helping the team to a pair of TranSouth Championships and the school's first trip to the NAIA National Championship, Moe was All-TranSouth and All-TranSouth Tournament as a sophomore. Moe, a two-time TranSouth Scholar-Athlete, held the team's second best scoring average as a junior.
